Final Thoughts: Ninth seed Cameron Norrie is carrying British hopes at Wimbledon as he enjoys his first-ever grand slam run beyond the third round.

The South African-born 26-year-old arrived at the All England Club in scratchy grass-court form but has found his groove over the past week. A five-setter against Jaume Munar – in which he powered home with the loss of just two games over the last two sets – was the only real hiccup.

Since then he has obliterated veteran Steve Johnson 6-4 6-1 6-0 and outlasted in-form 30th seed Tommy Paul 6-4 7-5 6-4. Norrie has dropped just one service game in his last two matches. He just the fifth Brit male ever to reach the last eight at Wimbledon and the first since Andy Murray in 2017.

Standing in the way of a breakthrough semi-final appearance is the well-travelled David Goffin. Currently ranked 56th after an injury-hampered period, Goffin is through to his fourth grand slam quarter-final – and his first since Wimbledon in 2019. A maiden major semi also beckons for the Belgian.

Goffin, 31, accounted for Radu Albot and 31st seed Sebastian Baez in straight sets. After coming from a set down to beat Ugo Humbert in four, he showed outstanding stamina and composure to oust Frances Tiafoe in a five-set, four-and-a-half-hour classic.

Goffin’s a former top-10 player and has rediscovered something near his best after a couple of years in the relative wilderness. But how he backs up from his marathon clash with Tiafoe remains a question mark. The ultra-fit and consistent Norrie is the pick here, though, with vociferous crowd backing and some commanding performances behind him.
