WILL EVANS’ daily preview serves up Wimbledon tips as Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic takes on qualifier Catherine Harrison in the second round.
20:05 (AEST), Thu 30th Jun @ All England Club, Wimbledon
History: First meeting
Final Thoughts: Ajla Tomljanovic is the last Aussie woman standing at Wimbledon but looks well-placed to replicate her watershed 2021 quarter-final run after a superb first-up win.
The 44th-ranked Tomljanovic put away 18th seed Jil Teichmann 6-2 6-3 in a comprehensive display. The 29-year-old won 73 percent of her first-serve points and was broken just once.
After following up her first-round upset of fifth seed Anett Kontaveit at Roland Garros with a loss to Varvara Gracheva, Tomljanovic reached the Nottingham Open quarters and lost to Jelena Ostapenko in the Eastbourne second round.
Making it past the second round of a grand slam for just the third time in her career at Wimbledon last year, Tomljanovic beat Alize Cornet, Ostapenko and Emma Raducanu before being halted by Ash Barty in the quarters.
Her second-round opponent, Catherine Harrison, is ranked 262nd in the world. But after powering through the qualifiers – her first for a grand slam – the 28-year-old overwhelmed No.86 Arantxa Rus 6-1 6-4 in impressive style.
The French Open champs of the past two years – Barbora Krejcikova and Iga Swiatek – may prevent a repeat of last year’s Wimbledon run. But Tomljanovic looks in excellent touch and should be too classy for her bolter opponent today.
