The Feehan Stakes – or the John F. Feehan Stakes, to give the race its real name – is a Group 2 weight-for-age race held over the mile at Moonee Valley in early September. Current prizemoney is $500,000.

The Feehan Stakes is a popular early-Spring contest for horses kicking off their carnival campaigns. The winner of the race is granted a ballot-free entry into the Cox Plate. The race is named after John Feehan, the original owner of the land on which Moonee Valley Racecourse now sits. Between 2005 and 2018 the race was known as the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes, after the Malaysian horse owner, but reverted to its original name in 2019.

Some of the greats of the Australian turf have won the Feehan Stakes, including Rising Fast (1954), Better Loosen Up (1990), Sunline (2000) and Northerly (2001).

Feehan Stakes 2022: Trevor Lawson’s preview

Track From what we’ve been told it should be on the soft side of a 5. The rail is back in the true here… the inside has had a break with the rail out at the last two meetings. So it’ll be leader-ish – the fence will be the place to be.

Speed We’ve got a very small field and there’s no speed here. Mr Brightside and Spanish Mission will lead. Earlswood will take a trail and the rest usually settle back.

2 MR BRIGHTSIDE [$2.00] won well first-up in the PB Lawrence when in need of the run. Has a good record at this trip and maps to find the front if Williams wants to. Can run to a new level here.

4 EARLSWOOD [$3.80] won narrowly first-up over this trip in the autumn. Has had surgery since then. He’s a chance if he’s fully fit.

6 INSPIRATIONAL GIRL [$5.00] ran well when resuming last prep, then won well second-up. She’s first-up here but should have reasonable residual fitness and doesn’t have to run to her best to be competitive.

1 SPANISH MISSION [$8.00] resumes here. He ran well first-up in the autumn off a shorter break over this trip. He should be forward enough here to run a race.

5 FORGOT YOU [$14] is an honest horse but has no great figures to feature here. I’m happy to risk him.

3 SOUND [$34] is a ten-year-old resuming here. Has won well at this class before but hard it’s hard to see it happening here.

Betting strategy

Top pick Mr Brightside
Best value Spanish Mission

I agree with the market with Mr Brightside on top. Betting-wise however, I’d want a slightly better price than the even money currently available – probably at least $24. At the early prices Spanish Mission looks a decent play. He’s first-up, and ran a strong third behind Earlswood when resuming in the autumn. He should go forward here which is where you’ll want to be.
