One of the better sprint races of the Victorian winter, the Group 3, weight-for-age Sir John Monash Stakes is run at Caulfield Racecourse in July. First run in 1994, it’s raced over 1100 metres (the same course as the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate) with current prizemoney of $200,000.
Sir John Monash Stakes 2022: Trevor Lawson‘s preview
Track They’ve put it up as Good 4 early. There’s not much rain (if any) predicted so it should stay good, all being equal.
Speed Sartorial Splendor will lead. Rainbiel, Felicia, Mileva and Oxley Road will sit handy.

4 Oxley Road [$2.80] resumes here. He’s a consistent galloper who races well fresh, and gets a good run on the map here. The horse to beat.
8 Mileva [$3.40] also resumes here. She won at this track and distance fresh last prep and maps to get a good run. She’s a great chance.
5 Ashford Street [$7] is racing well, winning three of his last four. I would prefer him on a softer track and back to the 1000 metres. Happy to risk.
9 Felicia [$10] resumes off a long spell… she’s had one run in more than 600 days. Doubt she can run to her best, which is what she would need to win this. Happy to risk her too.
3 Sartorial Splendor [$13] is on the quick back-up and is racing honestly. He looks the leader and has some claims in what is a fairly weak Group 3 race.
“This time when he came back Pete said our little boy has finally become a man. He looks outstanding this preparation. We’re really excited to get him to the races.”@kscoleman on Oxley Road in the Sir John Monash Stakes #RacingPulse pic.twitter.com/7qZuBy3gFo

1 Aysar [$16] resumed at Group 3 level with a solid run in Adelaide, before failing in The Goodwood. He’s been given some time off and some gear changes here. I can only give him a rough chance but he does have the ability at his best.
10 Bless Her [$20] ran well early in the prep, then had excuses. She’s been given a seven-week freshen-up here. She maps to sit handy on the fence. Can improve.
6 Outlaws Revenge [$20] failed last start, but his previous run was okay. He gets Williams on and has some chance at odds.
7 How Womantic [$21] was okay first-up down the straight, then pulled up with an issue at Swan Hill. It’s a long time since she’s won. Rough claims.
11 Rainbiel [$34] wasn’t suited the way the race was run when first-up at Swan Hill. Her previous form was solid, however. Has a rough chance here.
2 William Thomas [$61] isn’t good enough to win this.
Top pick Oxley Road
Best value Sartorial Splendour
It looks a bit like a two-horse race in the market with them fairly close, but it’s Oxley Road for me – I have him as the clear favourite over Mileva, who will be able to swoop if something goes wrong.
Looking further down, at the price I don’t mind Sartorial Splendour’s chances – he’ll lead and they’ll have to catch him.
