Run over the Flemington mile, the VRC-CRV Winter Championship Series Final (to give it its full name!) takes place on Finals Day each year. The race is a quality handicap at Listed level, with total prizemoney of $200,000, and is the culmination of the Winter Championship Series run throughout Victoria.

Winter Championship Series Final 2022: Trev’s preview

Track The rail is in the true and it should play well… Flemington generally does. There’s isn’t much rain around. The track drains evenly anyway, you should be able to win from anywhere.

Speed The speed looks to come from the Lindsey Smith the stablemates – Too Close The Sun from nearer the inside and Tuvalu from the outside. Pauls Regret, Prince Of Helena and Edison will sit handy..

Runner-by-runner

12 Tuvalu [$2.90] was big last start here over 1630m, exceeding the market price and running to a new peak. He looks to be able to hold that rating here. Can come across from the wide barrier and sit handy.

15 Sir Davy [$5.50] produced a big spike rating two runs ago when beating Visinari. He rated down slightly last start. He can return to his normal figure here, which gives him a chance.

5 Looks Like Elvis [$6] ran on strongly first-up here, producing a big peak, then ran home nicely second-up at Randwick over 1400m. The extra trip suits, he’ll get back in the run and be strong late. Looks one of the dangers to the favourite.

7 Frankie Pinot [$9] is racing well and is another one who gets a long way back. He’ll need the speed right on. Rough chance.

16 Mystery Shot [$12] hasn’t been suited at his last two starts, getting well back. He gets a better run here with a senior rider on. Rough chance.

8 Hi Stranger [$18] is yet another one that will get back. He’s racing honestly, but will need the speed on. Rough chance.

2 Dawn Patrol [$19] at his second Australian prep. He was heavily backed first-up in the Feehan Stakes and didn’t do anything. He then jumped from 1600m to 2500m for the Bart Cummings and again, didn’t produce anything. McNeil rode him at his first two and he’s not on here. I’m happy to bet around him.

13 Edison [$20] is fourth-up now and steps to a mile. He was honest last start at 1400m and will be fitter here. Rough chance.

3 Too Close The Sun [$26] was well found first-up here and was terrible – he led and dropped out. His previous form to that is okay but it’s hard to see him running to his best here. Rough chance.

10 Paul’s Regret [$26] produced a peak figure last start, winning the Swan Hill Cup. Not sure she can repeat that here.

1 Serpentine [$41] is a former Epsom Derby winner that has lost his way since then. He’s drawn wide with the apprentice on. Only a rough chance

I don’t think the rest are up to winning this: 4 So Si Bon [$31], 6 Creedence [$91], 9 Lunar Flare [$41], 14 Mohican Heights [$41] and 17 Winning Partner [$61].

Betting strategy

Best Bet Tuvalu

I’m all in on Tuvalu. I’ve got it at the top of my market and I reckon the current market price is value too. If he can hold his strong rating from last start then he’s a good thing for mine. Get him strength!
