WILL EVANS’ daily preview serves up French Open tips for a fourth-round clash between 20th seed Marin Cilic and world No.2 Daniil Medvedev.
00:45 (AEST), Tue 31st May @ Stade de Roland Garros, Paris
History: Played 3: Medvedev 3 V Cilic 0
Last meeting: Davis Cup, 2021 (F): Medvedev d Cilic 7-6 6-2
Final Thoughts: World No.2 Daniil Medvedev has carved a dominant path to the French Open’s Round of 16. The current US Open champ and 2022 Australian Open runner-up is one win from matching his best effort at Roland Garros – a quarter-final appearance in 2021.
Medvedev has lost only 24 games in disposing of Facundo Bagnis, Laslo Dere and 28th seed Miomir Kecmanovic in straight sets. The 26-year-old held serve throughout his sizzling win over Kecmanovic and produced 42 winners.
The 33-year-old Cilic, who won the 2014 US Open and has reached finals at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, was a French Open quarter-finalist in 2017-18.
A handy clay-court performer over the years, Cilic has climbed back into the world’s top-25 and has been outstanding in Paris so far. The Croatian veteran lost just three games in a first-round demolition of Attila Balazs and dropped only five games in a third-round thrashing of French stalwart Gilles Simon either side of a four-set victory over Marton Fucsovics.
Medvedev has won all three previous clashes with Cilic – including a five-setter at Wimbledon 2021 and a Davis Cup clash later in the year.
Cilic is certainly capable of dragging Medvedev out into deep waters here. But the Russian has been near-flawless so far and will find a way through to the last eight.
