WILL EVANS’ daily preview serves up Wimbledon tips as Brit favourite Emma Raducanu confronts a second-round test against Caroline Garcia.
00:30 (AEST), Thu 30th June @ All England Club, Wimbledon
History: Played 1: Raducanu 1 V Garcia
Last meeting: Indian Wells Masters, 2022 (R64): Raducanu d Garcia 6-1 3-6 6-1
Final Thoughts: Emma Raducanu carries the weight of a nation’s hope and expectations, with no British woman winning Wimbledon since 1977. But after an injury-hampered build-up, the 19-year-old passed her first test in impressive style.
Raducanu pulled out during the first set of her only hit-out since the French Open in Nottingham. But the 10th seed overcame a tough first-up opponent in world No.46 Alison van Uytvanck, winning 6-4 6-4.
Raducanu burst into tennis fans’ consciousness with a fourth-round run on grand slam debut at Wimbledon last year, before creating history by winning the US Open.
Next up for Raducanu is experienced French campaigner Caroline Garcia. The 28-year-old is lining up in her 41st grand slam; she was a French Open quarter-finalist in 2017 and reached the fourth round at Wimbledon the same year.
Garcia’s stunning capture of the Bad Homburg Open title last week – beating former US Open champ Bianca Andreescu in the final – catapulted her into Wimbledon dark horse territory. But she made hard work of a first-round win over unheralded grand slam debutant Yuriko Miyazaki, finally prevailing 4-6 6-1 7-6.
The pair met for the first time in March at Indian Wells. Raducanu eventually overwhelmed Garcia in relatively convincing style, 6-1 3-6 6-1.
This shapes as a fascinating, seesawing contest, but Raducanu should be able to weather the Garcia storm and ride the crowd support to victory.
