Final Thoughts: Wildcard Daria Gavrilova gets her Wimbledon campaign underway against world No.112 Viktoriya Tomova.
After missing much of the 2020-21 seasons with injury, the 28-year-old has produced some surprisingly solid results at times this year. She upset the likes of Ons Jabeur and Elise Mertens on her way to the fourth round at Indian Wells. Granted a wildcard for the French Open, she progressed to the third round after blitzing Petra Kvitova.
Gavrilova’s grass-court build-up has consisted of first-round exits at the Libema Open and Eastbourne International, either side of a more encouraging run at the German Open. She rolled in-form Jil Teichmann after winning her way through the qualifiers, but went down to Maria Sakkari in the Round of 16.
Gavrilova made it to the third round at Wimbledon in 2018 but is 2-3 in first-round matches at the All England Club.
Tomova is lining up in just her seventh grand slam. She has won just one match at this level – on Wimbledon debut back in 2018.
But Tomova has hit a purple patch on grass in recent weeks, backing up a some decent wins in 125K tournaments with an unexpected quarter-final run as a qualifier at the Eastbourne International. Shelby Rogers and Kirsten Flipkens fell to Tomova after winning the first set, before she was comfortably put away by Camila Giorgi.
The pair have met once previously. Tomova carved out a dominant 6-3 6-1 quarter-final win at the ITF tournament in Cagnes-sure-Mer in 2020.
Gavrilova is nothing if not inconsistent and overcoming Tomova is unlikely to be straightforward. But her grand slam experience looms as a key advantage.
