WILL EVANS’ daily preview serves up Wimbledon tips for Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic’s third-round clash with former French Open champ Barbora Krejcikova.
20:05 (AEST), Sat 2nd Jul @ All England Club, Wimbledon
History: First meeting
Final Thoughts: Ajla Tomljanovic left the likes of Alize Cornet, Jelena Ostapenko and Emma Raducanu in her wake on the way to the 2021 Wimbledon quarter-finals – her first at grand slam level – and is on course to craft a similar run this year.
The 29-year-old Aussie crushed 18th seed Jil Teichmann 6-2 6-3 in the opening round before brushing aside American qualifier Catherine Harrison 6-2 6-2.
With world No.1 Iga Swiatek looming in the fourth round, Tomljanovic now lines up against 13th seed Barbora Krejcikova.
Krejcikova won the French Open as an unseeded player last year. She backed up that watershed triumph with a fourth-round appearance at Wimbledon and quarter-finals at the US and Australian Opens.
Hampered by an elbow complaint, the 26-year-old lost in the first round of her French Open title defence last month and had a limited grass-court build-up to Wimbledon. But Krejcikova has looked solid so far in accounting for Maryna Zanevska and Viktoriya Golubic in straight sets – her first wins since the Qatar Open in February.
Tomljanovic is a more accomplished opponent than Krejcikova encountered in the first two rounds, however, and has a real head of steam up. It shapes as a hard-fought clash and Tomljanovic will need to lift again, but her underdog price is hard to resist.
