Runner-by-runner expert preview and tip

Golden Slipper
Golden Slipper

The Golden Slipper is the world’s richest race for two-year-olds, with a prize purse of $5 million. It’s a Group 1 event over 1,200 metres, held at Rosehill Racecourse in autumn. There are five Group 1 races on the card on Golden Slipper Day, making it one of the highest-quality days of racing on the Australian calendar.

Golden Slipper 2022: Alfie’s preview

Track It’s currently a Heavy 8 (as at Friday morning) and with a little bit of rain around, I can’t see it getting too dry. So we’re looking at a fairly wet track again.

Speed Rise of the Masses, Best of Bordeaux and Queen of the Ball should settle forward, while Coolangatta should sit forward of midfielders off the leaders. The pace should be fast.

If anyone else was training Coolangatta [$4.80] you would put a line through her. She has the best figure in the field and elite trainers. She’s the one to beat even with the awkward prep.

Sejardan [$7] is proven in the wet after winning the Group 2 Todman last start. This is tougher.

She’s Extreme [$8.50] is proven in the wet and will be off the pace on a fast speed. Definitely a top chance.

Fireburn [$9.50] has beaten She’s Extreme, who is not without a chance here, so that makes Fireburn as one of the chances.

Best Of Bordeaux [$12] may be worth a play if it was drier. He’s racing really well and is in with a chance.

Jacquinot [$12] is a talented runner that has an issue starting. The blinkers go on here, could this be the key to him?

Revolutionary Miss [$17] would prefer it on drier ground.

Russian Conquest [$17] would need to improve a few lengths on last start to make an impression here.

Seven Veils [$18] won the Group 2 Reisling last start. I have her marked shorter than the market, but not in the top group of chances.

Queen Of The Ball [$19] in on the quick back-up after winning the Opal and is rock hard fit. Not without a chance.

Daumier [$20] is coming of the win in the Blue Diamond. He did SP $20 though.

Sebonack [$26] will be giving them a start so will be up against it.

Shalatin [$34] will have to improve to match it with the key runners in this race.

Lady Laguna‘s [$41] rating was down last start so she’ll need to improve here.

Rise Of The Masses [$41], Ojai [$61], Sweet Ride [$71], Millane [$71], Semillion [$101] and Man In The Mirror [$101] are below what is required to win this… they’re outclassed here.

Verdict

I have Coolangatta on top and will be backing Maher and Eustace to have her ready to go. We saw them get Hitotsu to win first-up in the Australian Guineas, so there’s no reason Coolangatta can’t get up here. I’d be happy to take $5 plus.

Like all two-year-old races, I can see another five or six chances that could win if Coolangatta is slightly off. She’s Extreme is my next best.
