The CF Orr Stakes is a Group 1 weight-for-age race over 1400 metres, held at Caulfield Racecourse in early February. The race is the first Group 1 event in Australia for the calendar year, and is worth $750,000. It attracts quality horses that are either first-up or early in their preparations as they launch their attack on major autumn races.
Champion Bets pro punter Trevor Lawson gave us his thoughts on the year’s first Group 1 race…
CF Orr Stakes 2022: Trevor Lawson’s preview
The rail is back to the true. No rain is forecast and it looks like just light winds from the south / south east, which will help the leaders somewhat. On the pace will be the place to be – they’re good horses so it’ll be hard to make ground anyway.
Lightsabre will probably lead from the inside. Lighthouse will sit handy and Behemoth and Tofane will also go forward from barrier. Sinawann will sit forward of midfield if he jumps well.
I’M THUNDERSTRUCK is very progressive with five wins from his past seven starts. He comes to WFA for the first time and is drawn a wide barrier. Will go back. Has a real task ahead of him here unless he can get the bias to suit, which is very unlikely.

CASCADIAN resumes here. He ran okay first-up last prep but will be back on the inside here. I think he’ll need this run. Just a rough chance.
BEHEMOTH ran okay first-up. He’s better suited here at this track and trip, where he has a great record. Gets Jamie Kah on and should roll forward from the barrier
WILD PLANET wasn’t suited first-up in the Australia Stakes. He’s better suited here at this trip. He can sit a little handier from the inside draw. Rough chance.
SINAWANN ran terrific at second Australian start in November, then wasn’t suited when resuming in the Australia Stakes after missing the start. Better suited here. The horse to beat.
TOFANE is a good mare with winning ways. She’s very consistent and drawn to roll forward here. She should be fit enough to be competitive.
“I think she’s a better autumn horse than she is spring. I think she is (going well enough to win).”

SIERRA SUE resumes here. She took a few runs to get going last prep, so she probably needs this run. Seems under the odds.
INSPIRATIONAL GIRL has had one run in 15 months and resumes off a throat operation. Drawn the outside. Has many negatives, prefer to watch.
LIGHTHOUSE was beaten for the first time in Australia last start when the race wasn’t run to suit. She’s better suited here and could get the right run. Has a chance.
LIGHTSABER ran okay first-up and will be fitter here. He looks the leader in a race devoid of speed, but does lack a touch of class. Only a rough chance.
SECRET BLAZE and JUST FOLK aren’t up to this.
I’ve got Sinawann on top, who is certainly the one to beat. Then Behemoth and Tofane equal after that.
I’m Thunderstruck looks genuine unders to me for those looking for one to lay.
