The feature event on a high quality early-spring raceday at Caulfield, the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes is run over 1400 metres under weight-for-age conditions. The race generally attracts high-quality middle-distance horses who are early in their spring preparations. Current prizemoney is $300,000.
PB Lawrence Stakes 2022: Trevor Lawson’s preview
Track It’s a Good 4 early. It looks like there’ll only be a little rain before Saturday, and in any case it drains very well. I think the worst it’ll get to is a Soft 5, but I’d expect a Good 4. The rail is out 9 metres so it will play on-pace.
Speed Buffalo River and Streets of Avalon have early speed and will take it up.

2 MR BRIGHTSIDE [$3.30] resumes here off winning the Doncaster in the autumn. He has winning ways and maps to get a good run here. He’s clearly the horse to beat. He hasn’t won first-up before, but has run well.
8 ELEPHANT [$7] won on this day last year when resuming in the benchmark race. The wide draw is a slight concern here. He’s only a rough chance for mine.
9 UNCLE BRYN [$10] is first-up here. He was super second-up last prep in a fast-run race. His other two runs in the prep rated well down, in races that were slowly run. I’m not sure he gets his desired tempo here.
1 REGAL POWER [$11] resumes here for new trainer O’Brien. He’s never won first-up. Expect him to figure later in the prep, but probably not here.
5 BUFFALO RIVER [$14] resumes off a short break after going to Queensland in the winter. I only give him a rough chance. His chances would be enhanced if the track was significantly rain-affected
3 STREETS OF AVALON [$18] wasn’t suited first-up when resuming on the wet track in the Bletchingly. He’s better suited here over this track and distance, where he’s run well in the past. Doesn’t want it soft.
6 AYSAR [$34] gets a couple of gear changes. He does race up on the pace, but it’s a long time since it’s won and I’m happy to risk him.
Top pick Mr Brightside
Best value Streets Of Avalon
Mr Brightside is certainly the horse to beat for mine, but I don’t really like this price so would be hoping for him to get out a little. The price I do like is Streets Of Avalon and he’s certainly the value bet for me… I think he’s overs after not being suited in the Bletchingly. He’ll be much better here as long as the track isn’t too soft, which it shouldn’t be.
