Final Thoughts: Phoenix Suns are streaking again as they surge towards the to playoffs seed, while Denver Nuggets are desperate for any win they can get to avoid the play-in tournament.

The 59-14 Suns boast a nine-game lead in the Western Conference. They have won their last six, culminating in a 125-116 away victory over the in-form Timberwolves yesterday. Deandre Ayton went off for a career-high 35 points, along with 14 rebounds, while Devin Booker also starred with 28 points and 7 assists. Landry Shamet (19 pts) came off the bench to drill five three-pointers.

Chris Paul, sidelined since the All-Star break, is a chance of returning today.

The 43-30 Nuggets have moved back up to sixth, responding to consecutive losses to the Cavaliers (119-116 in OT) and Celtics (124-104) with a 127-115 defeat of the Clippers two days ago. Nikola Jokic bounced back from a rare poor shooting night against Boston with 30 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocks against the Clippers. Aaron Gordon (16 pts, 7 reb, 6 ast) also made a telling contribution.

The Timberwolves are only 1.5 wins behind, but the Nuggets will still be eyeing off a top-four finish with the Jazz and Mavs only two wins ahead.

This rivalry ramped up during last season’s playoffs as the Suns swept the Nuggets in the Western Conference Semi-finals. The teams met twice in the first month of the season. The Nuggets gained some initial retribution with Jokic (27 pts, 13 reb) spearheading a 110-98 win in Denver. But the Suns responded a few weeks later with a 126-97 blowout in Phoenix, though Jokic was missing.

The Nuggets are 21-14 at home this season (14-21 ATS) but have lost three of their last four at Ball Arena. The Suns are an NBA-best 29-6 on the road (22-13 ATS), winning their last six away.

Home advantage, the ever-dominant Jokic and the Suns being on a back-to-back see the Nuggets go in as $1.62 favourites. But the Suns’ offence is on fire – scoring 125+ points in their last six games – and they have won nine of their last 10 on the second leg of a back-to-back.
