Final Thoughts: Dallas Mavericks are on the ropes in their Semi-final series against Phoenix Suns, but home-court may provide them with some respite in Game 3 as they look to get off the mark.
The top-seeded Suns chalked up a wire-to-wire 121-114 victory in Game 1 in Phoenix. Deandre Ayton (25 pts, 8 reb) top-scored, while Devin Booker (23 pts, 9 reb, 8 ast) put in a solid night’s work. Luka Doncic was enormous for the Mavs with 45 points 12 rebounds and 8 assists but support was in short supply. Maxi Kleber had five three-pointers off the bench for the visitors.
The Suns dominated the second half of Game 2 to run away 129-109 winners. Devin Booker put up 30 points, while Chris Paul (28 pts, 6 reb, 8 ast) put on a fourth-quarter masterclass with 14 points.
Doncic (35 pts, 5 reb, 7 ast) was again a shining light but few other Mavericks shone. After averaging more than 27 points during the First Round against the Jazz, Jalen Brunson has managed returns of just 13 and 9 points so far against the Suns.
Dallas are struggling to combat elite big man Ayton, while they outscored by 18 points during the 13 minutes their starting big man, Dwight Powell, spent on the court.
The Mavs are 31-13 at home this season (25-17-2 ATS, second in the NBA), winning eight of their last nine in Dallas. The Suns are 34-10 on the road (27-17 ATS, fifth in the NBA).
The rivals can’t be split in the head-to-head market. It’s essentially must-win for the Mavericks – they can’t afford to get 3-0 behind – and they are every chance of bouncing back if Brunson can rediscover his best and Luka keeps producing at his current level.
But in a pick ’em game, it’s hard to go against the Suns after their last two performances. They are gathering steam and appear to be making a quick beeline for another Finals appearance.
