Final Thoughts: Golden State Warriors drew first blood in their First Round series with Denver Nuggets, who will be desperate to avoid going 2-0 down before heading to Colorado.
The third-seeded Warriors carved out a 123-107 victory in Game 1, getting out to a 20-point lead by the end of the third quarter. Jordan Poole starred on playoffs debut, hitting five three-pointers in his game 30 points. Klay Thompson (19 pts) also hit five threes, while Steph Curry chipped in with 16 points and 4 assists in 21 minutes off the bench in his return from injury.
Front-court duo Draymond Green (12 pts, 6 reb, 9 ast) and Andrew Wiggins (16 pts, 9 reb) made a solid contribution.
Nuggets marquee man Nikola Jokic (25 pts, 10 reb, 6 ast) was relatively well-contained. Will Barton (24 pts, 6 reb, 5 ast) played a strong support role, but no other Denver players managed more than 10 points or 5 rebounds.
It was a tough shooting night for the Nuggets, going 11-for-35 from deep and just 46.2 percent from the field overall. Michael Porter Jr is hopeful of returning from his back injury during this series, but it won’t be in Game 2.
The Warriors are 32-10 at home this season (24-16-2 ATS), winning their last three at Chase Center. They are also on a six-game winning streak overall. The Nuggets are 25-17 on the road (22-20 ATS), winning 10 of their last 11 away games during the regular season.
Golden State coach Steve Kerr has a happy conundrum with Poole emerging as a top-quality starter in the back-court as Curry gets back to full health. The early signs are the Nuggets’ defence, ranked 15th in the regular season, may struggle to handle the Warriors’ arsenal of sharpshooters.
