What a tough race. I did admire the way the unraced PETROGARD trialled recently. He was beaten but showed speed to lead for home and wasn’t asked to kick away on the bend. The winner, who narrowly nabbed him, was ridden right out and shown the stick. That was this bloke’s 4th trial. He is yet to win one but has shown marked improvement in each of them. He is trained at Randwick by the Snowdens and has been supported overnight on the corporate bookies markets. So too has the unbeaten VENTUS who is pretty speedy and won at Quirindi on debut. Lots of money for it so best to quinella them up.
I have a strong feeling this young flyer of Cam Crockett’s named SALIRE will be his Kosciusko and Ctry Champs horse later this year and next. He’s only had 4 starts to date but is showing extreme talent and this may well be an easy kill, a stepping stone to a career littered with accolades. I like him a lot in this. Perhaps LAMBDOMA ENERGY who is resuming for trainer Kristen Buchanan can dash late and grab the quinella spot.
The large amount of scratchings has turned this race completely. I like ITA as she is a dab hand in the wet and is in form. Carries big weights in easier races and runs home hard every start. This is a step up but drops in weight at a trip that suits and is very fit. Plus, she boasts that glorious attribute of handling heavy conditions very well. I see her back about 5th to the bend then unleashing down the centre of this large straight, beating McCormack home. That’s my quinella.
