WILL EVANS’ daily preview serves up French Open tips for high-profile veteran Marin Cilic’s second-round clash with Marton Fucsovics.
20:30 (AEST), Wed 26th May @ Stade de Roland Garros, Paris
History: Played 2: Cilic 2 V Fucsovics 0
Last meeting: Indian Wells Masters, 2018 (R64): Cilic d Fucsovics 7-5 6-3
Final Thoughts: Marin Cilic faces a tricky assignment to progress past the French Open second round for the first time since making back-to-back quarter-finals in 2017-18.
World No.23 Cilic won the 2014 US Open and was a Wimbledon (2017) and Australian Open (2018) finalist. He produced some good form on the clay swing over the past month and obliterated Attila Balazs 6-0 6-1 6-2 in the first round at Roland Garros, blasting down 11 aces and winning 79 percent of his first-serve points.
Late-blooming Hungarian Marton Fucsovics is ranked 57th in the world and made the fourth round at the 2020 French Open. He achieved a career-best grand slam result at Wimbledon last year with a quarter-final appearance.
Fucsovic’s immediate lead-up form was modest, failing to make it to the Madrid Open main draw and pulling out during Italian Open qualifiers.
Receiving a favourable first-round draw at the French Open, Fucscovics defeated qualifier Geoffrey Blancaneaux 6-2 6-4 6-4.
Cilic won both of the players’ previous clashes, at the 2017 Basel Open and the 2018 Indian Wells Masters.
Fucsovics has caused some issues for big guns at recent grand slams. He beat Daniil Medvedev at the 2020 French Open and knocked Jannick Sinner out of the first round at Wimbledon last year. Cilic looks a little under the odds here as a $1.44 favourite and I’d expect to see this one go at least four sets.
