WILL EVANS’ daily preview serves up French Open tips for a second-round clash between Camila Giorgi and Yulia Putintseva.
22:30 (AEST), Thu 26th May @ Stade de Roland Garros, Paris
History: First meeting
Final Thoughts: World N.37 Yulia Putintseva is a warm favourite to eliminate 28th seed Camila Giorgi in the French Open second round.
Kazakhstan’s Putintseva powered through the opening round with a 6-3 6-1 win over Irina Bara. Her bright start in Paris continues a solid clay swing, including a semi-final run at the Istanbul Open and a Round of 16 appearance at the Italian Open after upsetting former French Open champ Garbine Muguruza.
Giorgi overcame a rough start to defeat Zhang Shuai 3-6 6-2 6-2 first up. But it was an important drought-breaker for the 30-year-old Italian, who arrived in Paris on a seven-match losing streak stretching back to her Australian Open third-round loss to Ash Barty.
Giorgi made it to the third round at Roland Garros in 2018, while her best grand slam effort was a Wimbledon quarter-final appearance in the same year.
Putintseva has a stronger French Open track record, reaching the quarters in 2016 and 2018. The 27-year-old also made it to the last eight of the 2020 US Open. Both of her WTA titles were on clay.
It’s a contrast of styles here with Giorgi the aggressive shot-player and Putintseva a patient, mentally tough performer who relies on her opponent’s mistakes. Given the rivals’ recent formlines, I have to favour Putintseva to advance to a likely third-round date with seventh seed Aryna Sabalenka.
