History: Played 23: Australia 14 V Sri Lanka 9
Last meeting: June 7, 2022: Australia d Sri Lanka by 10 wickets (36 balls remaining) at R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium
Final Thoughts: Australia will look to seal their three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka with a game to spare after powering to a 10-wicket win in Tuesday’s opener in Colombo.
The hosts were on track to set a formidable target after Danushka Gunathilaka (26 off 15), Pathum Nissanka (36 off 31) and Charith Asalanka (38 off 34) steered them to 1/100 in the 12th over. But Sri Lanka collapsed spectacularly to be all out for 128 in the final over. Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva (17 off 15) was the only batter outside the top three to score more than one run.
Josh Hazlewood (4/16) and Mitchell Starc (3/26) tore through the Sri Lankan line-up. Kane Richardson (1/22) also picked up a wicket, while there were two run outs.
Skipper Aaron Finch – under pressure after struggling at international level for some time – scored an unbeaten 61 off 40 balls, including four sixes. Opening partner David Warner finished 70 not out off 44 balls, smashing nine boundaries as the world champs cruised home with six overs to spare.
Maheesh Theekshana (0/25) and Chamika Karunaratne (0/13) were the only Sri Lankan bowlers to go for less than 10 an over.
It was Australia’s ninth win over Sri Lanka in the nations’ last 10 T20I, which includes a 4-1 series win on home soil in February.
Sri Lanka can take some positives out of their top order’s bright start. But the $3.56 underdogs have plenty of work to do across the board to force this series into a decider on Saturday.
Hazlewood has racked up 21 wickets in his last eight T20Is and again shapes as the Lions’ biggest worry in game two.
