History: Played 17: Australia 9 V Sri Lanka 8

Last meeting: October 28, 2021 (T20 World Cup): Australia d Sri Lanka by 7 wickets (18 balls remaining) at Dubai International Cricket Stadium

Final Thoughts: Australia and Sri Lanka get their five-match T20I series underway at the SCG on Friday night.

Australia hold the narrowest of leads in their overall head-to-head with Sri Lanka, but they have won the teams’ last five T20I clashes. Sri Lanka won series in Australia in 2013 and 2017, but Australia prevailed 3-0 in a 2019 rubber on home soil and took out the teams’ 2021 T20 World Cup group match by seven wickets.

Adam Zampa was player of the match with 2/12 off his four overs, helping restrict Sri Lanka to 6/154. Charith Asalanka top-scored with a modest 35 off 27. David Warner (65 off 42) and Aaron Finch (37 off 23) got the Aussies’ chase off to a flyer and they reached the target with 18 balls to spare. Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva (2/22) was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers.

This is Australia’s first outing in the Twenty20 format since their brilliant World Cup triumph. One of the stars of the success, David Warner, is missing from this clash but Big Bash stud Ben McDermott shapes as an ideal replacement at the top of the order. Meanwhile, captain Aaron Finch, Steve Smith, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, Zampa and Glenn Maxwell – who finished an indifferent BBL campaign in record-breaking fashion – are all on deck.

Josh Inglis will make his Australian debut at No.3, while Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc will lead the pace attack.

Sri Lanka will look to the likes of Asalanka, Dinesh Chandimal, Pathum Nissanka and captain Dasun Shanaka to drive their bid for an upset.

Australia are just $1.15 to take out the series opener. Expect McDermott to seize his opportunity to cement his place in the world champs’ succession plan.

Tip: Special – Ben McDermott and Pathum Nissanka to score 30+ runs each @ $6.00
